NRW Minister President Armin Laschet receives the first e.GO Life

Aachen, May 09, 2019 – Today e.GO Mobile AG started the delivery of the electric car e.GO Life at the production site in Aachen. The first serially produced cars were received by Armin Laschet, Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Lord Mayor of the City of Aachen Marcel Philipp and the Rector of RWTH Aachen University Prof. Dr. Ulrich Rüdiger. The electric car is being manufactured at the e.GO factory in Aachen Rothe Erde since March 2019. Already 3,300 pre-orders have been registered.

Prime Minister Armin Laschet: “North Rhine-Westphalia wants to become a pioneer, driver and driving force for electric mobility in Germany. In addition to our know-how, we must also locate the production of core electromobility components in our country. The e.GO Mobile AG is a success story from North Rhine-Westphalia and makes an important contribution to it.” The Prime Minister continues: “Here in Aachen, the engineers and car mechanics are showing in an impressive way how electromobility ‘made in North Rhine-Westphalia’ is gaining momentum. Scientific excellence translated into industrial production – thus creating new jobs in structural change.”

e.GO Mobile AG plans to supply all customers with pre-orders by the beginning of next year. Next year it is planned to switch to two-shift operation as soon as possible in order to be able to produce at least 15,000 e.GO Life. More than 150 new jobs have already been created for the series production of the e.GO Life in factory 1 and 2 at the TRIWO Technopark Aachen Rothe Erde. e.GO Mobile AG already has a total of over 450 employees.

“The series production of the e.GO Life in Aachen is a proof of the excellent cooperation between the RWTH and the City of Aachen. RWTH research results are transformed into inventions on RWTH Aachen Campus and into industrial production with the help of the city’s economic development,” says Marcel Philipp, Lord Mayor of the City of Aachen. “I’ve been driving an electric car to work for quite some time, now I’m doing it proudly with an Aachen car.”

Based on RWTH Aachen Campus, a research network of science and industry, e.GO Mobile AG was able to build on the experience of more than 3,000 researchers and developers from all disciplines and almost 400 enrolled technology companies on the campus to develop e.GO Life. Prof. Dr. Günther Schuh, Director of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) and founder of e.GO Mobile AG, and a team of production researchers wanted to prove that electric cars can already be produced cost-effectively and customer-oriented with an Industrie 4.0 infrastructure. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Rüdiger, Rector of the RWTH Aachen University, sees the lighthouse project of the RWTH Aachen Campus as a confirmation of his university’s aspired excellence in interdisciplinary cooperation and problem-solving competence: “I am very pleased that series production of the e.GO Life has now started and thus impressively demonstrates how successfully RWTH Aachen University is turning research into innovation. The e.GO is a success story we are very proud of. Our first e.GO Life will of course have an exclusive parking lot in front of the RWTH main building.”

The e.GO Life is a compact 4-seater electric car that is particularly suitable as a second car or fleet vehicle. The electric car will initially be launched onto the market with a high-voltage 60 kW electric motor and a 21.5 kWh battery. At the end of 2019, the two variants with 40 and 20 kW and correspondingly smaller batteries will follow. As a result, gross sales prices for the basic versions, including batteries, can range from 19,900 euros (Life 60) to 15,900 euros (Life 20) without the German Federal environment incentive.

Dr. Oliver Grün, CEO of GRÜN Software AG and enthusiastic Tesla driver tweeted when he surprised the e.GO team at CeBIT 2017 with the very first pre-order that he was very proud to pre-order an innovative electric car from a German start-up. “As a digital entrepreneur, I am particularly enthusiastic about the Industrie 4.0-based manufacturing process, which, in addition to the low price, probably enables very long use and component updates.”
